General view of the Naveta...
Building from megalithic period in elliptical and "U" shape. It has narrow low entrance. After it has a little hall and then you can find a sepulchral room. This room has 4,25 metres in height, 13,6 metres in length and 6,8 metres in width.

Itīs better to go to visit it by yourself or in small groups, to avoid being annoyed by the other people. The best time to go there is at dawn or dusk. Itīs situated at 5,5 kilometres from Ciutadella on the main road to Mao. There are a lot of signs showing us how to get there.

Itīs the ancient building which has two floors in Europe and one of the most ancient in the prehistory of Menorca.
It was built between late Pretalaiotic period and the beginning of Talaiotic period, about 1.400 b.C. The tribes considered that it was the home of the most important members of the tribe: the dead. The ancient mentality didnīt recognise the different between the reality and dream, the life and death.

At the excavation were found hundreds of human skeletons. Among the bones they found a lot of buttons in "v" shape, and some disks with round shapes embossed on it. Later the Naveta was used as a cowshed. In the 50s it was excavated and restored. One stone from the top is missing and nobody knows where it is.

Detail of the entrance...Like a grave this monument is like a ship in which dead people begin the trip to another world . Who was buried in this incredible monument? Heroes, kings, high priests,...Nobody knows it. At the front part of the building, at the top, one of its big stones is missing. A love legend tells us something about it. There were two giants (itīs known by the tradition of Menorca that was occupied by giants in the past) , two friends, who were competing for the love of a woman. One of them had to dig a well and the other had to build the Naveta. The first to finish his job would marry the girl.

The giant who was digging the well found water first. He began to laugh. The one who was building the Naveta was carrying the last big stone and heard of the success of his competitor. He became very angry. Blinded by the envy and the jealousy he threw the last stone inside the well and killed the first giant.

Nowadays, near the Naveta we can find a well called "Pou de sa Barrina". This is the place where we are supposed to be able to find the remains of the first giant. This isnīt the end of the tragedy. The second giant, the murderer, threw himself down from the cliffs, because he saw the pretty lady in sadness for the death of the first giant.

Nowadays, in this ancient territory, the millenarian Naveta is waiting every winter solstice to begin the trip to the death world.
