You have to take the old road (Camí Vell). About three kilometres from Ciutadella you can find quarries. On one side, you can find the ones which are still working and on the other the ancient ones, these are the quarries we are looking for.

This place is near Ciutadella City, and you can visit it at any time. We recommend visit it at dusk because you can to check the incredible show from the lights and the shadows on the rocks.

Another interesting quarries in Menorca to visit: Binicalsitx, Robadones, Santa Ponça y Alcaufar. All of them are classified like historic-artistic heritage.

From these "Mares" quarries dug, people from the city have extract stones to build their houses. It isn’t known how ancient they are, however it’s supposed than it has more than 200 years.

View of the principal quarry...Along the history, Ses Pedreres de s´Hostal have seen how people who were working in it have improved the way to work and extract the stones from it. The extraction is made in cubic ashlars. After, they are divided in small pieces that are used in different ways. Traditional extraction was made with a bush-hammer and some special marks were left on the wall of the quarry, like scratches. When machines were introduced in the production of stones, quarries become in straight shape with deep incisions.

This quarry was closed in november 1994. After, the Litica Association was born. This association rented these quarries to avoid their destruction. It was a foreigner woman who found the importance of these quarries. Her name was Laeticia Sauleau an Italian sculptress. This woman, with other people, create the Litica Association. The objective of this association is to restitute, rehabilitate and reconvert these kind of quarries of Menorca in places to do some cultural activities and landscape attraction.

Lithica Association was create in 1994, nowadays has more than 180 members. It works in Menorca, but has important contacts with similar associations in Spain and abroad. In the quarries, Lithica has an information stall to take some information about them.
